On Decision Making...

We all make decisions, don't we? However, most of us made too many decisions based on a short-term outlook.

We must firstly, instead, focus on what our long-term goals really are. After all, you are growing older into the future and not the other way round. When you have finally decided on who and what you are going to be in the long-term ahead, you then start to make decisions that are congruent to that of your long-term goals and perhaps value system as well.

Now, the most difficult part: Sticking to decisions. In fact, many of us have trouble making decisions! And also, making make decisions, only to discard it simply because no actions were taken to reach what had been decided.

Anthony Robbins a insight that I truly think is useful and sums up what really needs to be done if you want to achieve success in your life:

First of all, decide on committing to achieve. For example, deciding now to be more knowledgeable in business issues.

Then, be willing to take massive actions to achieve it. Therefore, in order to be knowledgeable in say, Marketing, go to MPH and pick up a marketing text. Read it. Apply it. Reflect on it and so on. Buy the next book after you've finished the first.

Soon enough, you should be able to notice what is working and what is not. For example, you may be really interested in Service Marketing, but found yourself reading too much into Advertising or PR. If this is the case, narrow your search towards Service Marketing related texts. Narrow all other mediums you are learning from. Focus in to make sure you are getting what will propel you to your goal.

Use whatever life gives you. You are not bound to your circumstances. Use your resources available to you, and make the best out of it. It will be exciting and more fulfilling I assure you.

Anyway, we will screw up. Yes, we will screw up in life. However, screw ups are perhaps the BEST way to learn. So, go ahead and try new things. If you screw things up, it is perhaps a priceless lesson no money can buy you. With that new found knowledge after the screw up, go ahead and try to achieve less screw ups and perfect it.

Remember, what seems impossible usually can be possible if you persist into the long term. Oh ya, be flexible in your approach.

Well, that's all for tonight folks. Whatever I've written is from the book I am reading now. If you find the information useful, you may want to purchase this book.

So, for me, if I have to decide on joining the hotel industry or a banking industry, I'll decide. Yes, I'll decide. Will I make a wrong decision? Maybe. Why not? However, I will just pick myself up and gather my thoughts and DECIDE what to do and how to redeem the situation. Then I walk ahead... simple.

Rants of Darnie for today

I received a letter from SMU today. I was hoping that I would win the NOL Best Graduating Student Award. However, I did not (yet, I hope). Instead, it was a letter from the Registrar informing me that I am awarded the degree of:- Bachelor of Business Management (Cum Laude).
It also says, "Accordingly, you are entitled to all rights, privileges and honors attached to the degree." However, I do not really understand what the sentence meant. What rights, privilege do I have? Honors; well, I suppose the honor of having Distinction? Do the rights mean rights to ask for a higher salary? Can someone enlighten me on this?

OK. If you are wondering why this picture of a Aluminium Box Van. Today, I drove this. Yes! I drove this and felt like the king of the road. It was really fun and I look forward to driving it again. Was driving it for logistics purpose for a Boy's Brigade camp. Diesel, anyone?

Also, anyone heard of the Straits Bank? Might want to pursue a career there. Just couldn't locate information about it really. I suppose it is more niche and less publicised in Singapore?

Recently a global bank advertised a job vacancy for a 1-year contract with the Marcomm department. Pay is very competitive and delicious! Yummy. Something that I would love to do as I looked through the job description. For once, I saw for myself that hey, banks do have positions for talents like me. Hahaha. Ok, I better not blow my head off this. LOL.

Adobe Photoshop skills and Dreamweaver skills will be advantageous. The thing is, I know Photoshop pretty well. I need people to teach me and educate me what is Dreamweaver. How is Dreamweaver different from Photoshop. Is Dreamweaver the CS3?

Anyone please? Please tag me or add a comment here. You will be deeply appreciated.

Pack My Room Day

Nothing can be more fufilling, seriously, than packing your room. I know. Many of you who are reading this now are feeling guilty. You must be thinking, "Pack my room? Are you nuts? Who packs his room?" That's the problem. Despite having the luxury of time, very little of us treat our room like we deserve it.

We spend about 1/4 to 1/3 of our life sleeping; mostly in our bedroom. Some of us make a fortune inside there. Some of us get our As inside there. Some of us make babies inside there. Some of us met our first love inside there. Some of us watch TV inside there. Some of us read our favourite books inside there. See. Our room is our palace. Treat it well. Pack it.

The above picture shows my newly arranged and packed wardrobe. Hanging on the left are my ties. Going to need alot of it if my hotel employs me. Hanged from left to right: Slacks, Jeans, Black Pants, Long-sleeved shirts, Short-sleeved shirts, Polos, sweaters, Jackets. Below are stacked my shorts, towels and t-shirts. Left to right as well. 2 boxes hold my underwears, belts and singlets. Next to it are my polos as well. The most bottom level holds my weights, bedsheets and other miscellaneous items.

I spend alot of time at my workstation. Plenty of space for books, magazines and folders as you can see. From IKEA if you are asking. Lights are added by myself. You can look for your favourite light assessories and install it on the workstation. In order to make it condusive (think the opposite of your workplace in the office), I use warm lights, boxes, frames and other decorating items to 'spice' up the corners. Notice the neatly stacked magazines on the left (slanted). It adds 'body' to the workstation. It is all about playing with space.

I bought a chair from IKEA as my working chair. Turns out that it is extremely uncomfortable. It is too hard for my bottom. However, IKEA sells cushions. I simply picked one that had the correct dimension to fit neatly onto it. There you go. $10 for a long way of comfort. Thinking cap, my dear.

Finally. I've found a golf buddy. He is none other than my TPJC buddy Davin Foo. The greater thing is that we are both novice. With this, there is no room for stress; just loads of fun and learning. We decided to take some pictures in the hope that I can try to photoshop maybe our face onto PRESTIGE or TATLER magazine. However, in view of the poor lighting condition and the possibility of a lawsuit (Thomas from FORTUNE magazine is already threatening to take legal actions against me; however I will be referring back to the Law of Passing Off to access the situation and to explain to FORTUNE why there is no need to), I have decided to just post our humble pictures here.

Today, both of us did better than before. More balls flew. That is good news! Once again, I want to inform all my readers: The Marina Bay Golf Course is open to public. The driving range is of course, but you'll have to pay for the Green. Make sure you have your handicap scores etc.

Frankly speaking, I find IKEA meatballs irresistible. After our game, we headed straight to IKEA Tampines. We ordered 10 meatballs each and shared 6 chicken wings. Heaven! Of course, don't forget a tour of the showroom. The Summer Season furnitures are in!

Do not be grossed out. There is nothing scary about having a huge grasshopper or lucust crawling to and fro infront of you when you are driving. Simply remain calm. Wait for it to crawl to the wiper. Flick the wiper switch. Watch and hear the insect shout " You bastard @%)%&(%^$#%..."

Today, 1 June 2007, marks the day I complete Al Ries and Laura Ries' The Fall of Advertising and the Rise of PR.

How it faired according to me? : Hell of a read. Go buy it. Costs around $30.

My take away after reading this book: My eyes open to a new realm of understanding. The lies of advertising agencies and their quest for brand building (I meant using animals to create 'creative' campaigns that shake the nations but not sales). I now understand how the new economy of today (think blog etc.) is shifting power over to everyone else other than the company (or the big advertising firms), and therefore the need to embrace PR to help build a brand (now I am talking).

Advertising still has its role. It is to defend the brand. (Too bad, most advertising firms see defending a brand as not being 'creative' (whatever it means), as well as a treat to its account management and its award winning capability). This book says Advertising is to advertise what the brand already is (what the brand is after a successful PR had built it into a successful brand) and to defend it, to promote what 'already is'. However, most advertising firms say advertising is to (use animals to say how great a product really is and to capture by shock and awe). They say the best ads will win awards. However, they never say the cute little beaver never really made people want to drink the beer. Wow.. insight!

Ok. Buy this book. It is easy to read and will certainly open up a closed mind that you and I already have. Go. Pick up your butt and walk into that bookstore and splurge on this book.

Oh yes.

Vesak day gave most of us a good rest. So, this morning (the day after Vesak Day of course), Davin and I went to the Marina Bay Golf Course (www.mbgc.com.sg) for a morning at the Driving Range. This course is public so one can loosely assume the course to be 'less prestigious' than that of say, Raffles Country Club etc. However, do not be fooled. We spotted many fast and furious cars in the proximity. The picture below shows but one of the many luxurious cars. Porches, Minis, Mercs, BMWs, Chryslers and more. What is it telling us?

Either the rich are learning to embrace the general wealth status (think Merc driver trying to snap up discounted Textbooks for their children)... or the poor are getting richer (think the amount of Lexus and Merc you find at a typical HDB muti-storey carpark)... or we are all embracing cohesion regardless of wealth (you can forget about this... really)... or it is just a matter of 'I want to play here, the car is just a car.'

Anyway, Davin and I had a good time picking up the basics. I hit a few smooth and far shots. We even had lunch there at the Canopy Cafe (WARNING: Expensive). However, the view is good. The breeze is good. Fantastic way to relax if you have the time to.

CATERPILLAR ASIA called me in the middle of my swings. An Interview session has been arranged for next next week with 3 of their people. I better cut my hair and pump some iron (kidding). Remembered that their Marketing Rep program really allows one to learn alot. If I'm lucky I can get to travel I guess.

As many of you will realise, the weather today is cool, windy and pretty stormy. Caught a moment when the clouds looked really scary (See Below). And you are right, many of us will look forward to sleeping in the weather! Yay!
